First Nations Apology
I was glad to read about the Canadian apology to the First Nations people yesterday, in regards to the thousands of children who were separated from their families and sent to Indian residential schools. This began in the 1870’s and was done to assimilate them into the dominant culture and to try to kill the Indian within them, thus stripping them of their culture and heritage. Sadly many were abused too. You can read some of the First Nations people responses here.
This apology reminded me of the one which Australia gave to the Aborigines in February this year. I think there should be many more political and religious leaders apologizing to various people groups around the world.

I know I beat this dead horse a lot, but I think it is time for us (the Church) to offer an apology through being a living alternative to core issues of these broken relationships. Public apologies and official reparation is important, but doesn’t absolve all of us from the many (and continued) wrongs. I am struggling with what this looks like here in our inner city community. Lord have mercy…
