Slavery Today

In 2007 it was the 200th anniversary of William Wilberforce et al managing to abolish the slave trade within all countries associated with the British Empire. Many other countries across the world then followed suit and abolished slavery. However there are more slaves today than ever before. CBC has a very poignant photo gallery today, picturing slaves in Africa. Many of them are children. This is WRONG, plain and simple. Do you know, for example, that most of the chocolate you eat comes from cocoa plants which have child slaves? A lot of these children’s families are tricked into giving their children over, thinking that they are going on to have a better life somewhere, get and education etc, when really they are placed in a factory working really long hours. What can you do? Well, first go to Stop the Traffik and sign their declaration of freedom. Read through their website and find things going on in your area. Think about what chocolate, clothes etc you are buying, where are they coming from? Who made them? What are their wages and living conditions like etc? Have a look at these sites Concious Consumer, No Sweat Apparel, People Tree There are plenty of other sites out there if you look on your search engine. Feel free to leave any below. If more and more of us stand up and say no, and avoid the brands who use slavery as a form of manufacture then slavery will hopefully be eradicated for good.
