Adopt-a-Pixel

Jamie and Kim Arpin-Ricci, leaders of YWAM Winnipeg are trying to adopt a child from Ethiopia. They have longed for a child of their own for some years now. As they are missionaries, they do not have the money required to adopt, therefore they have set up a fund called Adopt-a-Pixel. They are asking you to consider getting involved in helping them in the process. At the website there is a beautiful picture of a baby. The pixels of this image are yours to “adopt”. Simply visit the website and “adopt a pixel”. Every donation, even as little as $1, will really help. Their goal is to raise $20,000 towards the process.

I don’t know Jamie and Kim on a personal level, but in the contact I have had with them and through reading Jamie’s blog, I know that they have a whole lot of love waiting to give to a child. If you can help them out at all please visit their website. Thank you.

Slavery Today

In 2007 it was the 200th anniversary of William Wilberforce et al managing to abolish the slave trade within all countries associated with the British Empire. Many other countries across the world then followed suit and abolished slavery. However there are more slaves today than ever before. CBC has a very poignant photo gallery today, picturing slaves in Africa. Many of them are children. This is WRONG, plain and simple. Do you know, for example, that most of the chocolate you eat comes from cocoa plants which have child slaves? A lot of these children’s families are tricked into giving their children over, thinking that they are going on to have a better life somewhere, get and education etc, when really they are placed in a factory working really long hours. What can you do? Well, first go to Stop the Traffik and sign their declaration of freedom. Read through their website and find things going on in your area. Think about what chocolate, clothes etc you are buying, where are they coming from? Who made them? What are their wages and living conditions like etc? Have a look at these sites Concious Consumer, No Sweat Apparel, People Tree There are plenty of other sites out there if you look on your search engine. Feel free to leave any below. If more and more of us stand up and say no, and avoid the brands who use slavery as a form of manufacture then slavery will hopefully be eradicated for good.

123 Meme

Sonja tagged me a few days ago now (I’m behind on google reader yet again!) with the 123 meme. Here are the rules:

1. Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. No cheating! 2. Find page 123. 3. Find the first 5 sentences. 4. Post the next 3 sentences. 5. Tag 5 people.

OK, so I cheated! The book right in front of me was The Homeschoolers Book of Lists. It would bore most of you silly, especially as page 123 is a list of world currencies! I went to the bookcase instead and picked up the first book I laid eyes on.

This comes from Michael Frosts Exiles “…Travelling to Indonesia to help with the international relief effort after the tsunami is. Joining a church-planting team is. Standing with mothers in the middle of a busy intersection to protest the death of their sons is. Why do our churches often miss this experience of communitas? For no other reason that they often avoid liminality, opting for safer, more secure environment.”

Consider yourself tagged if you want to participate!
