Stone Altar - JT Devotion Day Fifteen
“At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!’” 1 Kings 18:36-39 (NIV)
Today’s Jesse tree symbol is a representation of a stone altar built by Elijah, which God consecrated with fire, showing the people the true light of God. Elijah is called by God to dispel the myths of the false gods increasingly worshipped by the people. Elijah did not seek his own glory, but that the glory of God would be revealed to the people.. The people are all agreed, convinced, and satisfied; Jehovah, he is the God. We hope some had their hearts turned, but most were probably convinced, not converted. The people believed because they had seen. In John 20:29 Jesus tells Thomas that he believes because he has seen him, but blessed are those who believe without seeing.
Today think about whether you have faith for the things you don’t see? Do you trust God for the unknown? Does he have to keep sending prophetic interruptions into your life to turn you back to him or are you continuously seeking him?
