Shepherds Crook - JT Devotion Day Fourteen

“So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives. So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.” 1 Samuel 16: 11-13 (NIV)
Todays symbol is of a shepherds crook, which symbolizes Jesus, the good shepherd, who lay down his life for others. In some ways, here we are back where we started, with the family of Jesse. God chose David to be king when he was still a child, in fact, it would be another 30 years before he became King. David was a good king because he loved God, he listened to him and God guided him. Kings must be wise and strong, and they must look out for and protect the people of their land, as shepherds protect their sheep. Things, as we know, didn’t always go well for David. His psalms are full of woe, as well as great praise. God told David: “I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son.” (2 Samuel 7:12-14) We now know that this was Jesus. David never stopped worshipping God, he wanted to honour him.
Today, think about how you can honour God. Read more about David in 1 Samuel 16 - 17 and 2 Samuel.
