Jar - JT Devotion Day Twelve

“The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.” Judges 7: 20-21 (NIV)

Today’s symbol is of a jar. It reminds us of how Gideon became an unlikely leader, helping his people to obey God’s laws and to cast aside false gods. God revealed his power to Gideon by letting his army of 300 men defeat the Midianite army of more than 100,000. Gideon followed God’s instructions and had his men approach the Midianite camp with their torches hidden in jars. When the time was right the men broke their jars, sounded their horns and shouted. The story of Gideon is very similar to Joshua and Jericho, which we read about yesterday. Both Joshua and Gideon listened to the instruction given by God and they made sure that their men did exactly what God had commanded. They followed his guidance, trusting in him. God often uses things which seem foolish to the world to demonstrate his might and power.

Today, God may be asking you to do something that seems foolish in the eyes of the world, but trust his instruction to you and walk by faith. Ask God to use you as a vessel to reveal his might and power. Read more about Gideon in Judges 7
